Alerts and Emotes allow you to communicate with your teammates, when you don't have voice chat enabled (and even when you do).
Alerts highlight a part of the map that needs attention. It also plays a sound to alert your teammates.
The are four things you can trigger an alert for:
All alerts are triggered by Holding L2 + Alert Button, where alert button is the thing you wish to trigger (Switch) or using the number keys (Keyboard).
The alerts are, by default:

Emotes put an emoji-like symbol above your player's head, accompanied by a corresponding sound.
The four emotes are: - Heart - Anger - Taunt (laugh) - Confusion (question mark) All emotes are triggered by Holding R2 + Emote Button, where emote button is the thing you wish to trigger (Switch) or using the number keys (Keyboard).
